I always say “worry is wasted energy” but it’s not always easy to “not worry.” Over thinking and constant worry add to unhealthy stress and play a role in the development of anxiety. It is necessary to unwind and not think; to give our brains a break.
Try some of my personal favourites to give your brain a break:
Being outside in nature fills our senses, nature pushes all unwanted and unhealthy thoughts out of your mind… even if it is just for a little while. Also, walk bare feet if you can, this is known as “grounding”. The earth is a massive battery that contains a natural and subtle electric charge, so walk on grass, sand or dip your toes in the ocean!
FIND A PURPOSE:
The best way to forget about your worries is to help someone else, volunteer at an old age home. (The wisdom and lessons one can learn from the elderly is truly priceless). Help out at the animal shelters, there is nothing better than a wet nose showing you gratitude and love. OR maybe you were born to support a cause you believe in, such as The Cancer Foundation or AIDS Foundation.
READING & LEARNING:
I am sure we all know by now, that the brain is a muscle and we need to “exercise” it, just like we exercise our bodies. Our minds are constantly seeking new information to process, learn and grow. The most successful and wealthiest people in the world, read constantly. One of my personal mentors told me: “leaders are always readers.” We are never lonely if we have a book. For those who don’t love reading, take a class or a course on something you have always wanted to learn such as; photography, painting, pottery, and even dancing, the choices are truly endless.
Meditation is an approach to training the mind, similar to exercise that trains the body. It teaches the mind to slow down and eventually one realizes that the mind is NOT in control, we are in control. Meditation reduces stress and controls anxiety, it enhances self-awareness and improves sleep and sleep quality.
Music activates the “feel good” part of our brains. Music can take us back to the exact moment of our favourite memory and it can lift our spirits in a couple of seconds. Music is magical! Music gives soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.
Writing or journalling is possibly one of the best tools out there for enhancing well-being on every level. Writing down your thoughts or feelings for the purpose of self-discovery and self-reflection is one of the oldest forms of “self-help/development” in the world. You don’t have to only write about thoughts and feelings, you can write about your goals and dreams or things you are grateful for and even daily events.
Personally I am a lover of the Arts! I love paintings, sculptures and visiting art galleries. I love poetry, dance and the theater! Music and architecture! Explore different mediums until you find one (or two) that speaks to your heart and sets your mind free…
